Restful Sleep for a Blissful Life
Restful Sleep for a Blissful Life
Welcome to today's discussion! Sleep is something we all do, yet many of us struggle with it. Is it possible that we are sleeping wrong? To answer this question, we have Dr. Kasun Wijethunga, a sleep expert and neuroscientist.
Welcome Dr. Kasun.
Thank you! I'm excited to
talk about this crucial yet often misunderstood topic.
Let's start with the basics.
Why is sleep so important
for our health?
Sleep is like a reset button
for the brain and body. It helps with memory consolidation, hormone regulation,
immune function, and emotional stability. When we don't get enough sleep, we
risk developing conditions like obesity, heart disease, and even mental health
disorders like anxiety and depression.
Many people struggle with sleep. What are some of the most common sleep mistakes people make?
That's a great question!
Some of the biggest mistakes include,
- Irregular Sleep Schedules-Going to bed and waking up at different times confuses our biological clock.
- Screen Exposure Before Bed-Blue light from phones and laptops suppresses melatonin, the sleep hormone.
- Caffeine and Late-Night Snacks-Stimulants like caffeine or heavy meals close to bedtime can disrupt sleep.
- Poor Sleep Environment-Too much light, noise or an uncomfortable mattress can make sleep restless.
What about those who wake up
in the middle of the
night?
That's normal! The key is not to panic. Avoid checking the time or looking at your phone. Instead, try deep breathing or a simple relaxation technique. If you can't sleep after 20 minutes, get up and do something calming like reading until you feel sleepy again.
Fascinating! Before we wrap
up,is there one common
myth about sleep you'd like to debunk?
Yes! The myth that we all
need 8 hours of sleep. While 7-9 hours are ideal for most adults, some people
function well on 6.5hours, while others need 9 or more. The real measure of good
sleep is how refreshed you feel during the day.
That's a great insight! Thank
you,Dr.Kasun, for sharing these valuable tips. Hopefully, we can all improve our sleep and feel
more energized.
My pleasure! Sleep well, everyone!
