Special statement from Ranil after returning from visit to Bribery Commission
The Bribery Commission had summoned former President Ranil
Wickremesinghe to appear before it on the 25th at 9.30 am. This was to obtain a
statement regarding a statement made by Parliamentarian Chamara Sampath
Dassanayake.
Accordingly, the former President stated in a special
statement to the media after visiting the Bribery Commission today (28) that he
did not see any shortcomings in the matter of MP Chamara Sampath.
Furthermore, Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe says that
withdrawing money from deposit accounts is not a crime, but investing money in
deposit accounts is a crime.
The former President stated that the central government and
provincial councils can only spend money in accordance with the Appropriation
Act, and that nowhere in that Act is it stated that money can be spent in a
deposit account only if permission is given, and that if permission is not
given by an Appropriation Act of Parliament or the Provincial Council,
permission will not be given at that time.
Meanwhile, former President Ranil Wickremesinghe further
stated that he had protested to the Bribery Commission regarding the disclosure
of files from the Bribery Commission to other parties, and that the President
had recently made a statement at an election rally regarding a letter he had
sent to the Bribery Commission, and accordingly, it appears that the Bribery
Commission's files will be requested from the Presidential Secretariat.
