Tragedy at Sabaragamuwa University sparks outrage, calls for urgent action against ragging

The Criminal Investigation
Department (CID) yesterday (May 04) arrested suspects in connection with the
ongoing investigation into the recent death of another student allegedly
involved in a freshman torture incident. On April 29, it was reported that a Sabaragamuwa
University student had committed suicide due to frustration over a freshman
torture incident. The deceased was a 23-year-old second-year student of the
Engineering Technology Department of Sabaragamuwa University.
On May 1, another student
of the university filed a complaint at the Samanala Wewa Police Station alleging that Dilshan committed suicide due to freshman torture. Following the
complaint, the Samanala Wewa Police on Friday (May 2) recorded statements from
20 university students accused of freshman torture. Meanwhile, the investigation into the alleged
molestation incident involving Charith Dilshan was handed over to the Criminal
Investigation Department (CID) on May 3, on the instructions of the Acting Inspector
General of Police (IGP).
